The Efficacy of Photobiomodulation

The health benefits of light have been extensively researched with over 2000 peer-reviewed scientific studies published. The light emitted by the sun is called electromagnetic radiation and encompasses many different wavelengths across the spectrum. Red and near-infrared light are part of these spectrum. Photobiomodulation describes the use of red or near infrared light to affect the function of ours cells: stimulate, heal, regenerate and protect.

Our cells don’t just need the right nutrients to function but they also require light. Certain wavelengths of light such as red and near-infrared can affect several pathways including but not limited to:

  • Neurotransmitters
  • Moods
  • Stress modulation

  • Gene expression

As mentioned above, the red and near-infrared wavelengths specifically have these amazing effects on our bodies. (Interestingly, even within that range, not all the red and near-infrared wavelengths seem to be created equal. Most research showing benefits of red light and near-infrared light in the narrow wavelength ranges of 630-680nm and 800-880nm.)

While most other wavelengths of light (such as UV, blue, green, and yellow light, etc.) are unable to penetrate into the body and stay within the layers of the skin, near-infrared light and red light are able to penetrate deeply into the human body (several centimeters, close to 2 inches in some cases). Therefore, able to directly penetrate and effect the cells, tissues, blood, nerves, the brain, and the bones.

Red laser therapy can be classified as an immune-boosting therapy. When cells that belong to the immune system, such as macrophages, T-cells or lymphocytes are exposed to the red laser light, they are energized. As a result, they become more active and vigilant. In other words, red laser therapy increases the effectiveness of the immune cells.

The red laser also has the ability to flag unnoticed pathogens like bacteria, virus, mold and fungi in our blood. Exposure to red laser therapy produces heat shock proteins in those pathogenic cells, which increases their visibility to be targeted by our immune cells.

Combining the two effects of immune stimulation and flagging of pathogens, it makes the treatment with Red Laser light an effective therapy!

It is very important that the immune cells are capable to communicate with each other when dealing with pathogens. This communication is done by cytokines. Red laser stimulates this production of cytokines. When a lymphocyte detects harmful foreign bodies, it can inform the other cells by releasing of cytokines. Therefore, the coordination of the immune system increases; it's like a mini messenger system that raises alarm.

As a result, we have detectable pathogens and a coordinated army of activated immune soldiers to execute the removal of pathogens.

How can we use red laser therapy at home?

Many clinics in Germany use IV laser therapy. A laser rod is inserted into a vein illuminating the blood. All components of the blood such as lymphocytes, red blood cells are activated and pathogens are flagged while flowing through the red laser light.

This process is quite complicated as you require an experienced doctor as well as a laser rod and clinic which delivers this therapy. Finding a clinic, travelling to a clinic, waiting for your treatment can altogether be time-consuming and inconvenient for most people. Therefore, a much easier way to do this treatment is at home. This is done by inserting the nasal clip of a V-Light 655 into one of your nostrils, which can actually achieve the same result as the IV method mentioned above.

Our nasal cavity is filled with very fine capillaries, which are close to the skin’s surface. Red light penetrates three to four millimeters deep, which can be seen by the red glowing nose when the nasal clip is inserted.

Intranasal red laser therapy is a scientific based systemic treatment. During the 20 minutes of treatment your whole blood circulates through your nasal cavity, enhancing your complete immune system.

Near-Infrared therapy

 

Near-infrared therapy mainly addresses the nervous system. The near-infrared zone is found just outside the spectrum of light. So unlike red light therapy, we cannot observe a prominent light in this equipment.

Near-infrared light increases cerebral blood flow, greater oxygen availability and oxygen consumption, improved ATP production and mitochondrial activity.

Conditions such as brain injury, major depression, ischemic stroke and age- related macular degeneration have greatly benefited from light therapy. It is demonstrated that patients with a traumatic brain injury who were treated with near infrared light showed improvement in reduced symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), better sleep and better social and occupational functions.

While the red laser only passes through the cartilage of nasal cavity, the near infrared intranasal light penetrates through to the bone.

The intensity of the near infrared light affects how deep these waves penetrate through bone. A 10 Watt equipment used in the nasal cavity will pass through the bone and nasal cartilage into the amygdala, hypothalamus, and the frontal lobe stimulating the regeneration process.

This treatment can be intensified by using the nasal equipment as well as a specially designed helmet to reach the whole brain from all angles. This helmet ensures that the near infrared waves reach the brain from the outside while at the same time the nasal equipment activates the brain from the inside.

Both the red laser device and the near infrared device are very beneficial to our health.     Question: when is the best time to use the red laser light? I have read that using it causes an increase in melatonin, so that the evening might be the best choice. That is what I am currently doing, once/day.

    • Yes that is correct. We use ours morning and evening.

  • is this red light therapy also beneficent to reduce nose polyps?

  • You refer to the Red Laser, but Vielight has both the red led 633 and red laser 655 intranasal devices. What is the difference?

    • Depth of penetration and intensity. The 655 penetrates sround 1/3 deeper with a stronger immune boosting effect. For medical purposes we do not even list the 633

  • can the nasal clip be applied to a dog with a polyp or nasal tumor?

    • I guess that depends on the dogs nose, compliance to leave it in for 20 min and what else you do. Most of the time are rectal ozone insufflations better for dogs and much more efficient for polyp and to boost the immune system of the dog to deal with cancer.
